Located 132 km (82 miles) from Paris, Rouen, historically one of France’s greatest ports, is a city on the River Seine in the north of France. It is the capital of Normandy. Formerly one of the largest and most prosperous cities of medieval Europe, Rouen was the Exchequer of Normandy during the middle Ages. It was one of the capitals of the Anglo-Norman dynasties, which ruled both England and large parts of modern France from the 11th to 15th century.
Travel to this famous, historic old French city dubbed by Victor Hugo as “the city of a hundred spires,” due to a string of tremendous church edifices, going from east to west through the centre of town, comprising of Saint-Ouen, Saint-Macloud, Rouen Cathedral, and the contemporary church of Joan Of Arc.
Throughout history, the city can boast a fabulous art scene, something that is still true to this day. At the cathedral, view famous paintings by Claude Monet such as the stone facade reflecting the colours of the sun, and the colourful stained-glass windows permeating with light. Through out the 20th-century, many others ventured to the city and were even inspired to paint the town.
Taking a stroll through Rouen’s pedestrian streets feels akin to stepping back in time: no cars, cobblestones, narrow little lanes, bell towers and even an antique district. Wander through the centre of the city and you can expect to find one of the oldest working clocks in France, oodles of colourful timber-framed houses, and even the very location where Joan of Arc was allegedly burned at the stake. Dawn or dusk, be amazed by this eye-catching city.
